Grillpan fire sparks emergency callout
A MAN has told of the dramatic moment he had to hammer on his neighbours’ door to wake them after a grillpan caught fire.
Emergency services were called to Restenneth Drive, Forfar, today after reports that a fire had broken out.
Police, fire service and ambulance personnel arrived shortly after 2am.
Allan Stewart, 28, a stonemason’s mate from Forfar, was the man who knocked on the door to wake the sleeping pair.
He told the Tele: “I woke up at 2am to the fire alarm going off next door.
“I got up, came into the close and the lady from upstairs was there, asking what was going on.
“We tried getting an answer by hammering on the door but there was nothing.
“We could see smoke in the kitchen and the lights were on. We called the fire brigade because we were getting quite worried but then they answered. “They had fallen asleep, him and his missus, and they’d had something on the grill.
“We brought it out and set it outside.
“It could have been a lot worse.
“We recently got these fire alarms installed by the council and they’re all connected to the mains — it saved his life.”
A spokeswoman for Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received a call at 1.59am to attend a grill pan fire at a residence on Restenneth Drive in Forfar. The fire had been put out by the time our appliances arrived.
“One male and one female had been inside the property but there was no damage and no injuries.”
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We attended a grill pan fire shortly after 2am as we are required to under these circumstances.
“It would seem that someone had put the grill on and fallen asleep.
“Two adults were checked over by paramedics but did not require treatment.”
A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We attended at the request of fire services and two adults were checked over by paramedics.
“There were no injuries and they did not require any further treatment.”
