Work on busy route
Stretch of road to shut for 10 days to allow for resurfacing
Part of Strathmartine Road is shut for the next 10 days, between Strathmore Avenue and Canning Street, for resurfacing work.
Some locals are anticipating the work could cause disruption.
Marlena Serafin, owner of the Golden Thimble, which is situated on the stretch of road set for closures, said: “I am a little worried that we won’t be busy at all. Normally people can park either directly outside the shop or across at Tesco, so they are happy to just park up and come in.
“I know they tell people that businesses will be open as usual, which we will, but I’m still worried we won’t have any customers as they can’t park just outside and drop in.”
But John Nimmo, 61, a retired special needs teacher from Lochee, said: “I’ve lived in Glasgow and Edinburgh and by comparison the roads across this city are terrible. Closures are inconvenient but the roads need repair work, as I know a lot of people who’ve had their suspension damaged driving around Dundee.”
A Dundee City Council spokesman said: “These roadworks are part of an ongoing roads maintenance programme across the city. A diversion will be in operation and access will be maintained for residents.”
Meanwhile, a 50m stretch of Gourdie Brae from West Lodge at Camperdown Park is shut to all vehicles for two weeks while SGN carries out gas main renewal works.
Hannah Adam, spokeswoman for SGN, said: “This is the final phase of a project to upgrade our gas network in the Camperdown Park area and involves replacing the existing metal gas mains with new plastic pipe.
“To ensure everyone’s safety while we work in the road, it’s necessary to temporarily close Gourdie Brae for approximately two weeks. A signed diversion route will be in place and local access will be maintained.”
MAJOR roadworks have begun today on a busy stretch of road in Dundee.
