Dundee fans left raging at Kane’s exit

- By LIAM KENNEDy

DUNDEE said they did not have to sell Kane Hemmings.

Then, less than a fortnight short of the start of the season, he is sold for a knockdown fee to English Football League One outfit Oxford United. Unfortunately, that’s football. A clause, as reported in the Tele, inserted in the forward’s three-year deal, penned last summer after his release by Barnsley, was a major part of why Hemmings agreed to come to Dens Park — although this was denied by the club.

Having rejected a deal the previous year, after Dundee were promoted, Hemmings was understood to be reluctant to move back to Scotland, having previously been with Cowdenbeath and Rangers.

A taste of life down south after a hit-and-miss season at Barnsley, whetted Hemmings’ appetite but the determination and persistence of manager Paul Hartley to get him on board persuaded him to give life in the Scottish Premiership a try.

Twenty eight goals l ater and Hemmings, having given Dundee a fantastic year of service, has his wish — a move back to England.

The unfortunate thing for Dundee is that, having allowed the clause to be inserted a year back, they’ve opened the door to recouping only a fraction of what the player, one of Hartley’s crown jewels alongside the possibly-soon-to-depart Greg Stewart and goalie Scott Bain, is worth.

Anger seems to be the overriding emotion among the Dark Blues punters at the moment.

Here is a snapshot of fan views, which range from frustration and fury to pragmatism in some cases.

@TelDee — 250k is nothing when you look at some of the fees being spent down south at the moment.

@DerryboyGreene — If we need the money, we need it now. If the club are being prudent and balancing the books etc. I’m happy enough so to speak.

@scottramsay2 — Can’t see how it’s Hartley’s fault? Surely a board decision.

@MJPayne86 — Surely we at least deserve to know more details? Why
