In the aftermath of the incident, the Gordons upgraded security measures at the house in the hope that it wouldn’t happen again.

Craig added: “We have had to spend thousands since it happened to make sure the house is safe for the kids.

“We needed a full security system and new doors on the front and back.

“I just think it’s totally wrong that someone would try to do this knowing fine well we are a family with kids.

“We didn’t have the money to spend — it was all debt but it needed to be done.”

Around an hour after trying to break into the Gordons’ home, Phinn broke into the home of Colin Chalmers in Invergowrie and stole £360 cash and two watches.

At Dundee Sheriff Court, Phinn admitted to attempting to break into a house with intent to steal and theft by housebreaking.

Both offences were committed on April 11.
