In the aftermath of the incident, the Gordons upgraded security measures at the house in the hope that it wouldn’t happen again.

Craig added: “We have had to spend thousands since it happened to make sure the house is safe for the kids.

“We needed a full security system and new doors on the front and back.

“I just think it’s totally wrong that someone would try to do this knowing fine well we are a family with kids.

“We didn’t have the money to spend — it was all debt but it needed to be done.”

Around an hour after trying to break into the Gordons’ home, Phinn broke into the home of Colin Chalmers in Invergowri­e and stole £360 cash and two watches.

At Dundee Sheriff Court, Phinn admitted to attempting to break into a house with intent to steal and theft by housebreak­ing.

Both offences were committed on April 11.
