Double the average rainfall this month
THIS month is on track to see above the average rainfall for July.
A Met Office spokeswoman said the final statistics for the month are expected shortly, but the mid-month figures indicate that Tayside has experienced a colder and wetter July than usual.
She said: “Figures earlier this month showed temperatures were a little down generally compared to the average July and that rainfall was running at 70% of the 30-year average.
“Normally we’d expect to see around 50% at that stage.”
The spokeswoman added the figures were recorded before the more drastic weather conditions, including high temperatures, thunderstorms and torrential rain.
She added: “These will likely have a significant impact on both fronts.
“We have a measure that updates in real time and that is indicating that across the whole of eastern Scotland, the average rainfall total is sitting at around 81mm.
“This is considerably higher than the 30-year average for July, which is 61mm.”
During a day blighted by thunderstorms last week, 12mm of rain fell in a single hour i n the region on two separate occasions.
This caused flooding on roads throughout Dundee, and a junction linking Polepark Road to Edward Street is undergoing repair work after a huge crack appeared, lifting a portion of the road.
A Scottish Water investigation has since concluded the sheer volume of rainfall was the cause and work is now under way to repair it.
The remaining days of July are expected to be much more stable.
Today is predicted to be mostly dry with some bright or sunny intervals, though a few isolated showers might be developing across Perthshire and Angus later in the afternoon.
Temperatures may reach 18 °C but are expected to sit consistently in the mid teens throughout the weekend.
Also this weekend, some rather cool northwesterly winds will most likely bring sunny intervals and a few more intermittent showers, though these will mainly arrive across the Angus and the Perthshire hills.
