Tayport boss feels team can step up
AS they prepare for a season in the Premier League, Tayport manager John Ovenstone is confident the club can bounce back and win promotion.
However, he admits he is still a few players short of where he wants to be.
“We have had a few trialists on show who have impressed and, hopefully, we can add a few new faces as soon as possible.
“We are short of experience however, particularly in defence, and that’s what we are concentrating on but it’s proving difficult.
“However, we are not panicking, as we want to take our time and make sure we bring in the right players.
“As far as pre-season friendlies are concerned, we played very well in our first game at Brechin but, if I’m honest, I was disappointed we didn’t take more of the chances we created.
“Our match against Lochee United was a different matter but, despite the 3-0 defeat, I was pleased with the players’ effort and for periods of the game we more than matched Lochee.
“The players are coming together well but it will take time for our new squad to gel.
“The more we play together the nearer we will be to the finished article and be closer to a return to the Super League at the first time of asking.”
Tayport will follow their friendly against Jeanfield on Wednesday, which ended 1-1, with a match against Glenafton at the Canniepairt tomorrow.
Ovenstone has been busy on the signing front bringing in no fewer than six players. They include Liam Ross, son of former ’Port legend Steve, local lad David Geekie, Craig Sturrock, Grant Mowatt from Montrose Roselea, Jamie Mackie and Scott McDowell.
