Demands for repairs to ‘nightmare’ city street

- BY ELLIOT SMITH

PEOPLE living in a Dundee street are calling for action to improve potholes and poor paving.

Pavements along St Kilda Road have been flagged up to Dundee City Council’s roads maintenance partnership, which has promised to address the issue.

But residents in the area have also highlighted a number of deep potholes in the road as another cause for concern.

Scott Murphy, 41, told the Tele: “The place is l ooking untidy. Nothing much seems to be getting fixed.

“The roads are also difficult, especially for buses coming along here. Drivers have to be careful.

“They are so uneven that if they are not repaired I think there could soon be accidents.

“This area is full of older people, including a lot of my neighbours.

“But there are also a lot of kids and I’d say the pavements and roads are quite unsafe at the moment.”

Retired soldier Thomas Ward, 78, said: “When you’re sitting on the bus or trying to drive down here, it’s a nightmare. It’s so bumpy.

“The speed bumps are in a state of disrepair and are actually making things worse.

“I see a lot of kids on motorbikes having fun charging over them.”

He added: “The council is doing a lot of work on the pavements but everything here is in need of repair work.”

Strathmartine campaigner Daniel Coleman has raised the issue of poor pavements with the roads maintenance partnership.

The partnership confirmed work on footpaths is included in its long-term plan, adding: “St Kilda Road footways are provisionally included in the 2017-18 footway programme.

“In the meantime, they will continue to be inspected on a regular basis and any actionable defects noted will be repaired to ensure safety is maintained.”

Another resident, who asked not to be named, said the problems extended beyond St Kilda Road.

She said: “The potholes are really bad.

“It looks pretty grim with the uneven speed humps as well.

“St Fillans Road and the top of St Ninian’s are both pretty bad too.

“However, I don’t think it’s dangerous since people drive carefully along here to avoid damaging their cars.”
