Solid United show wins derby match

- BY JUNICUS

THE countdown is on to the new junior season which starts next weekend.

Saturday past saw a number of clubs involved in friendlies.

Lochee United continued their impressive build up with another solid display away to North End.

Manager George Shields took the Bluebells back to his old club and showed no mercy when Lochee took the lead after only 10 minutes through a Patrick Martin goal.

The Dokens battled hard to get back in the game but the more experienced Bluebells added a second through Phil Hagan in 65 minutes.

Then, just to make sure, a Montgomery penalty made the final score 3-0 in favour of the Thomson Park outfit.

Lochee complete their preparations tonight when they take on a young Dundee United side at Thomson Park (7pm).

The Dokens will have one further test before the big kick-off when they meet Downfield away on Wednesday.

Violet and East Craigie served up an entertaining friendly at Glenesk with the Pansies just edging the verdict with a 3-2 win.

Nik Mann gave the Shipbuilders the lead but Ryan Dignan equalised. Then a cracking goal from Craig Bachelor gave the Pansies the lead.

A McArtney equaliser brought Craigie level again but the Pansies snatched a winner through Kevin Scott.

Craigie are in action again on Wednesday when they meet travel to meet Newport Amateurs.

Tayport went down 4-1 to Glenafton despite trialist Daniel Sanchez giving the Fifers the lead with a 30-yard chip over the keeper.

Glenafton levelled before the break, then 10 crazy minutes early in the second half saw Tayport concede three very soft goals.

Broughty Athletic moved smartly to sign Danny Cavanagh after he scored a hat-trick in last week’s friendly against North End and he is likely to be in the starting line-up for tomorrow’s friendly away to Cupar Hearts.
