Unwanted bikes recycled

-

MORE than 300 tonnes of unwanted bikes have been discarded at recycling p o i n t s by Pe r t h a n d Kinross residents in less than six years.

The Bike Station Perth has received more than 22,000 bikes from across the region since it was launched in 2010.

Its efforts in diverting them from landfill have been successful, as it services and repairs them before selling them on.

It has emerged, however, that many of the bikes taken to recycling centres have only very minor faults, such as a puncture.

In an effort to educate people about how to carry out simple repairs, the business is joining with Zero Waste Highland Perthshire to provide free bike maintenance workshops.

The partners also plan to offer refresher bike riding lessons in an effort to boost cycling in Highland Perthshire.

A four-week course will run at Blair Atholl Church Hall, beginning on Tuesday from 6.30pm-8.30pm.
