Four new homes rise from ashes of shops

-

A SET of four new council houses has risen from the ashes of the demolished row of fire-hit shops on Carnoustie High Street.

In January 2013, a fire gutted the historic Victorian row of shops at 18 High Street, destroying the Perfect Laundry, and Carnoustie Country Larder, leaving an empty shell.

Around 30 firefighters and six fire engines, including an aerial pump from Dundee, were called to tackle the blaze.

The fire was contained to the single-storey shops but firefighters believed an adjoining block of flats was in danger and people were evacuated from their homes.

After some public debate, Angus Council acquired the land and was able to develop four, one-bedroom council flats.

The project was carried out by Forfar-firm Andrew Shepherd Construction and work has recently finished.

Carnoustie councillor Brian Boyd said he was delighted to see the site’s regeneration and the addition of new social housing.
