Midfielder is loving life in Utd shadows

THIS week the Tele highlighte­d the fact underthe-radar Charlie Telfer is enjoying his best spell at Dundee United.

And, as he prepares for another battle when Dumbarton come to Tannadice tomorrow, the young midfielder admits that’s exactly how he likes it.

After a couple of seasons when he was thrust into the limelight by the £200,000 fee a transfer tribunal ordered United to fork out to Rangers for his services when he was still a teenager, Telfer admits being able to get on with his job almost unnoticed is a welcome change.

“I enjoy just getting on with it. I remember saying that to my parents at the time all that stuff about the tribunal was coming out, I didn’t really enjoy that kind of side to it,” says the 21-year-old.

“It put more pressure on me when I really just wanted to go out and play football.

“And I have enjoyed this season with the new boys coming in and the spotlight being on them. I’m in the background and that means I’ve just been working away and getting on with things. That suits me better.”

As he’s turned in a string of good displays, it’s also suited United as they’ve climbed right up into the thick of the promotion race i n the Championsh­ip. Telfer has more than played his part in the recent good run of results that’s left Ray McKinnon’s men just three points off the top of the table.

While he’s not one for blowing his own trumpet, he does agree his form has been good.

“I think this has been my best spell at United and it’s probably the longest run I’ve had in the team.

“Just playing every week and getting 90 minutes is great.

“It’s beneficial and even going away on loan last year was massive for me as well because it showed my where I needed to improve and what I needed to be doing to get me i nto the team.”
