Future taking shape
Form of iconic new museum emerges at city’s Waterfront
The snap was taken by Jim Crosby, using his flexiwing microlight, which he has used to photograph other Dundee buildings, including the new Harris Academy.
The image shows the outline of the £80 million building taking shape, pointing out into the River Tay.
Councillor Will Dawson, Dundee’s city development convener, said he understood the V&A project was “all going to plan. You can see from the picture the form of the structure — it really is quite impressive.
“It also gives you the scale of the building. I think now that the bottom section has been done, you will really start to see it take shape.
“We were told the bottom couple of sections would be the most difficult. Now that it is out of the way, I’m sure people will see it take shape and we will see more progression.
“From my perspective, it certainly feels like this latest phase has really shot up.”
Discussing the overall £1 billion Waterfront work, he added: “Interest has been shown in a few of the sites.
“That’s obviously ongoing but people really are taking in interest in that part of the city.”
Malcolm Boyd, construction manager with the V&A’s builders, BAM, said: “There are many more fascinating phases of this project to come.
“Soon local people will begin to be able to sense the overall shape of the building. However, it will not start to resemble its final appearance until spring 2017 when the first panels are added to the exterior of the building.”
Meanwhile, a public meeting is planned on November 29 at Discovery Point to discuss plans for a “major development” on Waterfront plot six, across the road from the V&A, consisting of offices, residential units, a hotel and car parking spaces.
