- BY JUNICUS

SATURDAY was generally a pretty good day for Tayside clubs in the Scottish Cup with 10 teams going through to the third round.

The new Violet management team of Ralph Henderson and Stuart Bell got off to a great start as they overcame a tricky tie against Blairgowrie, winning 4-1.

There was little between the teams in the first half but the Pansies grabbed the opener in 35 minutes thanks to a close-range header from Ryan Dignan.

They doubled their advantage i n 52 minutes when new signing Connor McLeod bundled in a cross at the far post.

Blair showed they were far from finished, however, and reduced the leeway four minutes later through a powerful free-kick from Stewart Nicoll.

But Violet looked more clinical in front of goal and George Duncan restored their two-goal advantage in 70 minutes. Three minutes later, Craig Batchelor sealed the win with a smart finish.

Carnoustie scored a late goal to snatch a victory at Kello despite playing for an hour with 10 men.

The Gowfers had keeper Jamie Robbie sent off after half-an-hour with Alan Cormack taking over in goal.

It looked ominous for Alan McSkimming’s side when Kello took the lead in 43 minutes. However, the Gowfers showed real grit in the second half and hit back with an equaliser from Steven Cook then Gordon McDonald grabbed the winner with 10 minutes to go.

Broughty Athletic are also through thanks to a l ate penalty winner at Johnstone Burgh.

The Fed made a brisk start and took the lead after only eight minutes when Danny Cavanagh cut inside and cracked a shot from 20 yards into the corner of the net.

The hosts made a determined start to the second half and grabbed an equaliser in 65 minutes.

The Fed grabbed a winner, however, with five minutes remaining when they were awarded a penalty after Ryan Blair was fouled in the box.

Jamie McCunnie took the spot-kick and slammed the ball into the net.
