QUITONGO CALLED UP — WIGHTON LEFT OUT

-

M O RTO N s t r i k e r J a i Quitongo has been called into t he Scotland U/21 squad but there’s no place for Dundee forward Craig Wighton.

Quitongo has been handed his first call-up weeks after his f ather, former Benfica, Hamilton and Hearts winger Jose Quitongo, warned t hat Portugal had made contact with a view to calling the former-Aberdeen trainee up.

The powerful and pacey centre-forward, who was the subject of a failed bid by Doncaster in August, has scored six goals this season and impressed in the Betfred Cup semi-final defeat by Aberdeen.

Quitongo i s j oined i n getting a first call-up by Hamilton forward Eamonn Brophy and Celtic keeper Ross Doohan. Aberdeen’s on-loan Arbroath goalkeeper, Robbie Mutch, has also been brought in for the November 9 friendly in Slovakia.

Coach Scot Gemmill said: “This match will offer the players another tough test as Slovakia have qualified for next summer’s finals.

“I think it’s important we continue to face strong opposition and challenge the players every time they come away with us.

“I’ve included a couple of new faces and, hopefully, they will see this as their opportunity to impress.

“I said last month I will leave no stone unturned in finding the best young players for the U/21 squad and this is a good chance for some new ones to come in and make their mark.”
