Fat Sam’s meeting led to proposal in Malaysia and Sri Lanka wedding

-

NO, this isn’t a scene from a movie.

That gorgeous sunset over the Indian Ocean is real and so are Mr and Mrs Mitchell, from Emmock Woods, Dundee. A well-travelled couple, they tied the knot at the Vivanta by Taj beach resort in Bentota, Sri Lanka, surrounded by family and friends, before honeymooning in the Maldives. Maria Hashim, 28, was brought up in the suburb of Colinton, Edinburgh, while Brent Mitchell, 32, is a Lochee lad and both are teachers. Maria works at St Vincent’s Primary and Brent is a PE teacher at Baldragon Academy. The pair first met at Fat Sam’s many years ago, with Maria recalling: “He was tall, dark and handsome — that’s what struck me first. “And the more I got to know him I realised how kind and generous he is — and he’s so, so funny! “Our first proper date was at an Italian.” Brent said: “I noticed her beautiful smile and caught her eye, got her number and arranged a date.” But what makes the chemistry happen? “We both seem to be loud, outgoing and love to travel,” said Maria.

Brent proposed on a trip to Langkawi, Malaysia, in July 13 and he made his move in a charming-low-key way.

“He called me out from where we were staying,” recalled Maria.

“He dropped to one knee and there on the sand was a love-heart decorated with shells. It was a really lovely gesture.”

The Sri Lankan wedding was stunning and these images were captured by local photographer, Lochana. Maid of Honour was Maria’s little sister, Tania, 21, and Best Man was Brent’s pal and workmate Terry Gray.

They were joined by Brent’s parents, Bruce and Linda, who live in Lochee, and Maria’s folks, Mina and Mohammad, from Edinburgh.

“We always wanted a beach wedding but the people who got most excited at the news were, funnily enough, my Primary 2/3 class at St Vincent’s,” said Maria.

Amazing pictures, a brilliant day and a happy couple — what more could you want?
