Woman dies after collapse at centre

- BY CONNOR MCCANN

A MUM has died in the street just yards from a doctor’s surgery in Dundee.

Paramedics and police officers were called to Lothian Crescent, Whitfield, after the woman — who was in her sixties — collapsed whilst waiting for her daughter-in-law.

It is understood a receptionist from Whitfield Surgery and another member of staff from the Crescent Centre where the GP surgery is based, performed CPR on the woman before emergency services arrived.

The woman, who has not been named, was found outside her car in the car park of the centre on Wednesday.

A member of staff working in the doctor’s surgery said: “The woman was in with her daughter-in-law. She decided to go back to her car to wait for her as far as I know. A fellow receptionist and another member of staff administered CPR before the ambulance arrived.”

Eyewitnesses said they saw and heard a young woman crying in the back of the ambulance.

One eyewitness, Claire O’Shea, 37, from Douglas, was across the road at Ballumbie Nursery at the time.

She said: “I was dropping off my daughter and I could see the ambulance lights flashing.

“The police were also there and both vehicles were there for about 25 minutes. There were quite a few people who were looking to see what was going on.

“I saw a young woman climb into the back of the ambulance — she was in tears. I didn’t know what was going on at the time but later I heard that the older woman had died.

“I heard from a friend who works in the centre she was sitting in her car at the time. It was really sad.”

Gordon Gibson, 47, who was in the area at the time, said the police turned up just after the ambulance arrived.

He said: “Later I found out that a woman had died.

“It was such a sad thing to witness — really awful.

“You could hear crying coming from the back of the ambulance.

“I hope the family of the woman get through this tough time.”

A spokesman said: “The Scottish Ambulance Service received an emergency call to Lothian Crescent at 11.49am.

“Two ambulances were accompanied by the police in attending the incident.”

A police spokeswoman said officers were called to deal with a medical matter. She added: “There were no suspicious circumstances.”
