- BY ADAM HILL

The blaze gutted the flat and caused significant smoke damage to the stairwell at the block on Blackness Avenue in the early hours of today.

Fire crews attended the scene around 1am and managed to quell the flames using a hose reel jet.

Residents today spoke of being told that they had to leave the flats for their safety.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said that the police knocked at his door and told him that he needed to leave due to a fire at the top floor flat.

He added: “I was sleeping at the time and there was a chap at the door.

“They told us that we needed to get out.

“There was smoke coming from the flat.

“I’m glad that everyone was okay — I didn’t expect this though.

“This is the first time that anything like this has ever happened. “It is usually very quiet.

“I’m not sure who the occupant of the flat is — I only recognised my neighbour when we were all outside.”

The resident added t hat fire crews had managed to get the fire under control and they had been allowed back into their flats a short time later.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said: “Three appliances attended the fire from Blackness and Macalpine Road fire stations.

“The crews stood down from the scene at 2.20am.

“There were no casualties as a result of the blaze.”

Today the floor was still wet inside the close from fire crews battling the fire.

There was signs of smoke damage on the bottom floor and the top floor was significantly smoke damaged.

Another l ocal resident said: “I was woken up by the fire engines in the street.

“There was quite the commotion and I saw smoke billowing out of the windows of a flat across the way.

“It all lasted about an hour before everything was under control again.

“It was quite frightening because I wasn’t sure if anyone was in the flat at the time.

“I was just praying that there wasn’t.”
