Forecasters warn of snow showers
DUNDEE is braced for sleet and snow — with forecasters warning temperatures are to drop below freezing.
The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning as snow is forecast to hit the city.
The warning, which came into force today, covers Dundee, Angus and Perth and remains in place until tomorrow morning.
Temperatures are expected to remain cold for the rest of the week.
The mercury was expected to drop to as low as -2C and snow has been predicted to fall later today.
Forecasters were expecting the wintery showers to arrive this evening.
Low levels across Tayside, including Dundee, are expected to be affected by sleet.
Forecasters expect Dundee and Tayside to remain cold tomorrow, with heavier snow showers predicted.
The temperatures over the next two nights are expected to be the coldest recorded this year.
A spokeswoman for the Met Office said: “The snowfall will most likely come in the form of sleet across Dundee.
“It is expected the snow will cover areas at around 300 metres above sea level but, as the area gets colder, there will be more chance for the city to experience sleet.
“A band of rain has been spreading slowly towards the east of Scotland and will turn to snow as it encounters the cold air.
“Heavier bursts could easily bring snow down to low levels which may include areas across the city.
“However it’s more likely to be sleet rather than snow.
“Overnight into Wednesday morning, there are concerns that heavier bursts could bring snow more widely to the area.
“It has been colder in other areas across Scotland although Dundee will see temperatures drop to around -2C on Tuesday and Wednesday night.
“Cold weather is expected to arrive in Dundee by Tuesday night and will remain there until Thursday.”
The spokeswoman said: “People should expect to wake up to very frosty conditions tomorrow as well.”
The weather is set to brighten up at the weekend as the clouds continue to move east.
The Met Office spokeswoman added: “The cloud will remain in the area for a couple of days before the weather starts to brighten up closer to the weekend.
“The cold temperatures will remain though but they are not expected to reach the kind of temperatures people will experience on Tuesday and Wednesday.”
The council said it is fully prepared for the looming cold snap.
A spokeswoman for Dundee City Council said: “We have been watching the weather forecasts carefully and all our resources are fully prepared.”
