Sam set for return

City actor to resume role in Corrie’s Barlow clan

- BY JAMES SIMPSON

IT’S been nine years since he last set foot in Weatherfield — and Dundee actor Sam Robertson is excited to be making his return to Coronation Street.

Former Harris Academy pupil Sam, 31, shot to fame in 2005 after landing his first-ever acting job playing Adam Barlow.

Sam will once again be appearing on our screens when his character makes a return to the soap later this month during a turbulent time for the Barlows.

Speaking to the Evening Telegraph today, the actor has said an element of “fate” has brought him back to where it all began.

He said: “I’m certainly surprised to be back.

“I genuinely didn’t see it coming but when a character isn’t killed off there is always a chance they will return.”

The actor, who starred in British movie The Legend Of Barney Thomson last year along with Ray Winstone and Robert Carlyle, said he has learnt a lot since his last appearance on Corrie.

He spent the last three years in both the UK and the US but, despite considering a move to the States for good, the Dundee FC fan returned home in June this year.

Sam, who appeared in Celebrity Big Brother in 2013, said: “The Coronation Street production team approached me not long after I’d come back from America and told me they were bringing the character back.

“They asked if I would be interested in playing him. The dates worked out and I had a chat with them in Manchester and they said they’d love to have me back. If it had happened the year before, though, it wouldn’t have been possible.

“I was also offered another job that would have taken me up to Christmas, which I knocked back, so there is maybe an element of fate to it.”

Sam has been back filming since September and, although there are still familiar faces, he has had to get used to the new studio and the “intense” filming on set.

He said: “I left in 2007. The people have been lovely and I’m really surprised how many people actually remember me, considering I was only there for two years.

“It does feel strange being in a new studio as well.

“The first couple of weeks were strange but the most surprising thing has been the process of the filming.

“We are making two-and-a-half hours of TV a week, so there’s a lot of material to get through. It is very fast and very intense, very full on, completely different from what I have been accustomed to.

“When doing other projects you maybe have more time to get your teeth sunk into a scene but you really have to be bang on the money every time you come in to work.”

The actor, who originally moved to Manchester to study English literature, had intentions of moving into sports journalism before landing the role in 2005.
