Community leaders set to create Xmas to remember

- BY CONNOR MCCANN

Buoyed by the success of recent events — including Stobfest, a weekend summer event — residents, businesses and councillors have laid the groundwork to bring more community involvement to the festive season.

Along with the light switch-on on November 24, a Christmas fair, treasure hunt and carolling will be included in celebrations which will span three days.

David MacDougal, of the Stobswell Forum, said: “This event is an effort to continue building the community spirit throughout the Stobswell area.

“Stobfest was very successful and that has been followed by a number of events including a well-attended Halloween one.

“The forum has been working with councillors, businesses, residents and Morgan Academy to increase the community spirit. We now have the confidence to create something a bit more special for the Christmas light event.”

The light night event will take place outside Morgan Academy on November 24 at 4.30pm to allow school pupils to sing carols. Events will then continue through to Sunday.

Businesses in the area may also stay open later on light night. Plans, which have not yet been finalised, are afoot for a shop treasure hunt, which would lead to a prizegiving on the Sunday.

Stobswell Parish Church will also hold a Christmas fair.

Lynne Short, a councillor for the area, said: “There are similar events in the West End and Broughty Ferry.

“The community wants to have an event which shows it off in the best possible light.”

Meanwhile, it has been revealed the Coca Cola Christmas truck is coming to Dundee on November 20.

It is the only city on the east coast of Scotland the famous vehicle will visit.

A TEAM dedicated to the Stobswell community say this year’s Christmas festivities will be the biggest and best ever.
