UE ex-pat in Dundee says ‘result bad either way’

- BY HANNAH DOLMAN

AN American ex-pat living in Dundee says he feels “embarrassed” about his country following a controversial campaign to become the US president.

Residents in the States were going to the polls today to decide whether Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump will take up office in the White House.

Both of their election campaigns have been hit by controversy, with Clinton marred by her alleged use of a private email server while she was Secretary of State, and Trump’s attitude towards women threatening to define his bid.

Americans living in Dundee have been keeping a close eye on proceedings but Forrest Alexander — owner of Pizza NY takeaway in the Hilltown — is concerned by the quality of the candidates.

The 37-year-old New Yorker said: “It makes me embarrassed to be American.

“The fact that they are the best the US can offer is scary.

“The rest of the world will be affected by the result and it’s bad either way.

“I won’t be voting — either option is bad. A lot of people don’t like Hillary but Trump is as bad for others.”

Vinny Scarsella, 27, from Buffalo, New York, plays ice hockey for Dundee Stars.

He says the election has sparked plenty of discussion among his colleagues.

He said: “There are about 14 of us from Canada and the US, and it’s been a big topic in the locker room.

“It’s definitely not clear cut who’s going to win. And the polls have been getting narrower.”

Vinny said he hopes the election will ultimately centre on what the future of the US should be.

He plans to have his say via the US version of the postal vote and said: “WhoWho thethe country chooses will change ththe directiontion foreveforever of the US but alsoa the world. “It’s tthe first tt i m e I c an remember two candidates witwith such completely opposing viewviews.”
