Grants to help talent raise city’s musical profile

-

SOME of Dundee’s top musicians have been presented with grants at the Caird Hall.

The 2016 recipients of the Dundee Musicians’ Award receive assistance to produce new Scottish tunes in a traditional style, many of which have a Dundee theme.

Kevin Findlay, a long-time Boogaloosa member and musical director of the Tayside Young Fiddlers, will use the award to help record 36 traditional tunes with the aim being to help encourage musical learning and enhance the local and national tradition.

Another award winner was Barry Nisbet, member of the bands Seven Sons, and Wire and Wool.

Barry will produce an album of his own original music, featuring a number of collaborations with musicians from the Dundee area active in the vibrant roots music scene.

Lord Provost Bob Duncan, who is the chairman of Leisure and Culture Dundee, said: “Since its inception, the Dundee Musicians’ Award has supported a varied range of projects and this year is no different.

“The award continues to raise the profile of the excellent and diverse music that’s coming out of the city of Dundee.”

The Dundee Musicians’ Award is organised by Leisure and Culture Dundee. It was established in 2008 to support the work of outstanding Dundee-based musicians by awarding grants towards the costs involved in creating new work in any genre, research and professional development.
