OAP forced out of flat by overflowing sewage

-

AN elderly disabled woman has been forced to sleep on her nephew’s couch for the last two weeks after her Dundee council flat was flooded with sewage.

Glynis Mitchell, 64, who is hard of hearing and has a pin in her knee, had to seek alternative accommodation after a pipe burst in her flat on Balcarres Terrace on Sunday October 23.

The family said the city council made no move to provide a temporary home for Glynis, who remained in the flat while the sewage began to overflow from the pipe and toilet.

That prompted her nephew, David Heenan, who is also her carer, to move her out of the foul-smelling flat.

David, 33, said: “I decided to move her out as it just isn’t habitable. She hasn’t been offered any other accommodation and now they claim that it is suitable for her to move back in.

“The council has been dragging its feet in fixing the flat and expects my auntie to do everything, like contacting tradesmen. She should be in her own house and I just feel like the council is not listening to us at all.”

David added that numerous tradesmen have been round to attempt to clean up the flat but that it was still i n poor condition.

A council spokesman said: “We are aware of the situation and will be discussing the matter directly with the tenant.”
