Safety plea after cyclist accident

- BY ADAM HILL

A DUNDEE cyclist who was hospitalised after being involved in an accident with a car has called for road users to be aware of people on bikes.

Alan Brown, 45, was left lying in the middle of the road after colliding with a car at the roundabout joining Coupar Angus Road and South Road, in the Lochee area of the city, close to the Lidl supermarket.

He was taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital (pictured right), where he says he was x-rayed nine times before receiving treatment for back and leg injuries.

He told the Tele today that he was still suffering from the incident more than a month on and has to take multiple pain killers on a daily basis.

The Lochee man said: “I can’t remember anything that happened after the collision. I have a vague memory of someone putting a blanket on me when I was lying in the road.

“I was later told I was lying there for 40 minutes.

“I flew 20 feet across the road. I am very lucky but I am in a lot of pain to this day.

“My bike was mangled. It is beyond repair.”

Alan has called for road users to be particularly careful at the circle where the incident took place.

He said that it is especially important when cyclists are sharing the road.

He said: “It scares me because if it had been a kid in the accident then they might have been seriously injured or killed. Some people go too fast on the road leading up to the circle and it is a disaster waiting to happen.

“It is a very dangerous circle for cyclists and for pedestrians who want to cross.

“People need to take a bit more care on the roads otherwise accidents are liable to happen.”

Alan has called for the crossing on the road — which sits a few feet from the junction — to be moved further up in order to prevent further accidents.

He said: “There needs to be something done there.

“I have had a few close calls at that circle as well as the accident.”

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland confirmed nobody had been charged in connection with the incident.
