Former Deep Sea Restaurant re-opens doors to customers

- BY JON BRADY

The Tailend — formerly the Deep Sea Restaurant on the Nethergate — is set to open its doors to customers.

An institution in Dundee for 77 years, the Deep Sea Restaurant closed its doors in 2014.

New owner Darren Spink and his family have decades of experience in the industry — running the Tailend’s sister restaurant in St Andrews and G & A Spink Fish Merchants in Arbroath.

Katie Voigt — one of the managers of the takeaway and a veteran of the St Andrews chipper — said: “Being in the same place as the Deep Sea is huge.

“I don’t really remember being in it myself but everybody speaks about it and if I tell people where we are it always gets a reaction.

“It’s a legacy to fulfil but we’re going to be doing it in our own way.”

The Tailend produces traditional fare as well as unique dishes — including a seafood curry and a breaded cod taco — and aims to use local produce whenever possible.

The takeaway will close for a week over the winter — but only because it’s not possible to obtain fresh fish during that time.

Katie said: “We will close for one week at the end of December depending on when Christmas and New Year fall.

“We don’t want to use frozen fish because you know right away when you bite into it.”

The owners had intended to open in October last year, having submitted the original plans almost 18 months ago.

However, the building has since undergone a massive refurbishment to make the premises fit for purpose.

Work included the installation of steel beams in the floor to support the heavy cooking equipment and the digging of deeper foundations to allow a new underground restaurant to be installed.

The eat-in restaurant is due to open in January.

AN iconic Dundee chipper has been given a new lease of life.
