Still going strong — Edith celebrates her 101st birthday at St Columba’s Home

-

SHE’S a Staffordshire lass whose heart was stolen by a strapping Black Watch soldier in the dark days of the Second World War.

And now she’s just celebrated her 101st birthday!

Edith Fair lives in comfortable retirement at St Columba’s Care Home in Logie Street.

She was born and brought up in Red Street, a village on the outskirts of Newcastle Under Lyme.

That part of the world is known as the Potteries, and one of Edith’s first jobs was painting ceramic ware before it was kiln-fired.

During the war, she worked in munitions and it was then that she met Dundee soldier Ian Fair at a dance.

He was later shipped out to the Mediterranean and saw active service in the Italian Campaign.

But the devoted couple kept in touch and were married in 1946, later moving to Charleston, Dundee.

Ian was foreman mechanic at DC Thomson’s Ward Road

garage for many years, and Edith worked for the firm too.

The couple had two sons, Robert and Gary. Robert has lived in New Zealand for many years, while Gary — who is also ex-DC Thomson — is still in Dundee.

Edith lost her husband in 1982 but still enjoys spending time with her family.

She has four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Edith celebrated her 101st birthday with family and also had lunch with staff at St Columba’s.
