Rival for No 1 spot good for team and me

- BY BARRY SMITH

SCOTT Bain returned to Dundee’s starting XI on Saturday at Ibrox after missing the last two games through injury and insists having a rival for the No 1 spot can only be good for the team — and him.

“It’s good to have competition at the club in all positions, so it can only be good for me,” said the keeper.

“I’m always trying to improve my game but even more so when there is someone who has done well and wants your place in the team.

“It spurs you on a wee bit more and you know you can’t let your guard down.”

The Dee had won the two games prior to the Rangers match, keeping clean sheets under the guard of David Mitchell, who Scott took time out to praise for his role in those victories.

“Mitch did really well when he came in and never put a foot wrong.

“Obviously, he kept two clean sheets and it was looking like a third in a row with me on Saturday until that one moment in injury time.”

There would have been a real sense of frustration in the dressing-room at full time having defended so well for the majority of the game.

The goalie says it was short-lived though, as the boys looked to the next fixture this weekend.

“The first thing after the disappointment of the Rangers game is who have we got next week and how we are looking to put in a performance like that at home.

“It can’t just be because we were playing at Ibrox.”

Up next at Dens Park are Inverness, who won with relative ease in the Highlands earlier on in the season when they beat Dundee 3-1 in what amounted to a poor showing from Paul Hartley’s men.

Bainy insists that result will bear no reflection in what Caley will face this Saturday.

“I think it will be a different game from when we last played them. The boys are going into the games more determined now,” he said.

“We haven’t done enough at home
