Seven police cars called to incident
POLICE swooped on a Dundee street after reports of a strong smell of petrol coming from a house.
Eyewitnesses told the Tele of seeing seven police cars, as well as a fire appliance, race to the address in Clepington Road around 1pm yesterday.
Residents say a police officer carried a green plastic petrol canister out of the property.
Police today confirmed they were called out to reports of a disturbance.
Stephen Henderson, 45, who stays next door to the tenement, described seeing the building swarming with police, adding: “At around 1pm, seven police vehicles swooped into the street and officers ran into the building.
“A fire engine also appeared and parked just outside. The next thing I saw was a police officer carrying a green, plastic petrol canister out of the tenement and placing it on the ground outside.
“Very soon afterwards, a man was led out of the building and placed in the back of a police car.
“It was hard to say what was happening but it was obvious the canister had played a key role.”
Graeme Campbell, 51, of Clepington Road, said he was looking out of his window when he saw police officers arrive and disappear into the building.
He explained: “It was obvious something serious was happening, but I didn’t know what it was.”
One woman who lives beside the property, near Arklay Street, said the smell of petrol was “very strong”.
Another neighbour said: “I was sitting and then I heard the sirens. They were so loud and there were so many of them you knew something major was happening.
“Several police cars and a police van arrived and screeched up at the door. The police smashed the wee pane of glass to get in the close.”
A spokesman for the force said: “Police Scotland attended reports of a disturbance at an address in Clepington Road, Dundee, at about 12.50pm yesterday.
“A 28-year-old man was detained in connection with the matter. The man has since been released.
“No one has been charged in connection with the incident.”
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to assist police at that address.
“However, our services were not required.”
