Motorists set for traffic disruption

- BY HANNAH DOLMAN

PART of a major road in Dundee is to close in December for utility works.

Claypotts Road in Broughty Ferry is scheduled to close between Strathern Road and Dundee Road on Sunday December 4 for pipe replacement works.

It follows completion of work in nearby Whinny Brae, Church Street and Seafield Road.

Scottish Water is carrying out a programme of works in Dundee, which are due to take about 18 months.

Broughty Ferry councillor Kevin Cordell said he was pleased with the way Scottish Water and the council were working together “to keep disruption to a minimum”.

He said: “Look at Whinnybrae as an example of how the council has worked well with Scottish Water.

“People complain when a road is resurfaced and then dug up a few months later. So, it’s a good thing that Scottish Water is working with us to keep disruption to a minimum.

“And Claypotts should be shut only for a day — on a Sunday — so hopefully that will cause the minimum problems as well. It’s unfortunate that road closures cause inconvenience but it’s key work that needs to be done.”

Neil Cooney, communications secretary for the Broughty Ferry Community Council, said he remembers the last time there was work on Claypotts Road.

He said: “It was incredibly frustrating. It’s never great when there’s work, whenever that is. But communication is the key thing. It’s important that we’re kept updated on when, how long and where the work will take place to avoid unnecessary frustration.”

A Scottish Water spokesman said: “Scottish Water’s contractor Kier is carrying out repairs to manhole covers in the area and the road will be closed on Sunday December 4.

“The repairs are expected to be complete in one day and the work is being carried out on a Sunday to minimise disruption.

“Three repair jobs are being carried out in the one day, also to minimise the disruption. We apologise for any inconvenience during these essential works.”

Meanwhile, road resurfacing work being carried out by the council at Whinny Brae was completed yesterday.

Resident Iain Douglas, 62, said he hadn’t minded the disruption as he was pleased to see the work finally in progress after so long.

He said: “It’s been a bit inconvenient but the workers have been great and have given as much access as they could. The road badly needed doing — it’s been a long time coming, about two years, so a few extra weeks haven’t bothered us.”

Fellow resident Nick Day said: “It’s taken longer than was anticipated but they’ve done a great job of minimising disruption.”
