Crews called to tackle fire at old Keiller sweet firm
FIRE crews were called to tackle a blaze at an iconic Dundee factory.
Two fire appliances attended the incident at the former Keiller factory on the city’s Mains Loan after reports that a fire had broken out.
The charred remains of a couch, along with other objects, were seen outside the building today.
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said today: “Firefighters attended a derelict building on Mains Loan at 3.24pm.
“Two appliances attended from the Kingsway station.
“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose real to extinguish the fire.”
Roberta Clark, 77, who lives nearby, said: “There have been a few fires in the grounds over recent times.
“Someone could potentially be injuured if it continues to happen.”
Police Scotland has been asked for comment but had not responded at the time of going to press.
The Mains Loan site closed its doors for the final time in the early 1990s.
Boiled sweets, butterscotch, humbugs, fruit chews, cherry lips, midget gems and hacks were just some of the sweet treats to have come out of the factory.
In a separate incident in the early hours of today, crews responded to reports of a fire at Claverhouse Industrial Park.
A fire service spokeswoman said: “We received a call at 12.08am regarding a small rubbish fire within a building in the Claverhouse Industrial Park.
“Two appliances attended from the Kingsway station. A hose reel was used to extinguish the fire and we ventilated the building. Crews were on the scene until 2.21am.”
Meanwhile, a joint investigation has been launched after a fire broke out in a flat on Arklay Terrace.
Crews were called to the Dundee street in the early hours of yesterday.
A police car was at the scene of the blaze today. A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “Police Scotland is carrying out a joint i nvestigation along with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.”
Five appliances were called to the scene and the blaze was extinguished using two hose reel jets.
No one was injured in the fire, which broke out in the first floor of the building.
