Weekend of woe for Flyers

FIFE Flyers lost both their games, 6-5 to Braehead Clan in Kirkcaldy on Saturday followed by a 3-2 defeat in Nottingham against Panthers last night.

On Saturday, Clan took the lead after 27 seconds with a goal from Matt Beca.

On the powerplay, Chase Schaber levelled for Flyers.

Braehead regained the lead when Alex Leavitt netted from close in after 12 minutes but, with just under two minutes left in the opening period, Schaber grabbed his second of the night to make it 2-2.

Clan’s Craig Peacock put them 3-2 ahead after 58 seconds of the restart but Matt Sisca levelled.

Sisca added his second to put the home side 4-3 ahead. However, Braehead retaliated within 25 seconds through Peacock.

With one minute played in the third session it was Fife’s turn to strike early as Kyle Haines rifled home to give them a 5-4 lead.

Just 12 seconds later, a howler of a clearance from Sisca saw Daniel Alsberg level at 5-5.

Clan took the lead with five minutes left when Scott Pitt scored for a 6-5 lead.

Flyers pulled netminder Owen with just over one minute remaining in favour of the extra skater. However, Braehead held out for a 6-5 win.

Last night in Nottingham, Flyers started the game without Ryan Single, injured against Braehead.

The home side had the lion’s share of the play in the first period but neither could find the breakthrou­gh as the session ended all square at 0-0.

Panthers took the lead in 23 minutes with a goal from Andy Sertich, then made it 2-0 through Alex Nikiforuk.

Fife responded through Sebastien Thinel then Brendan Brooks levelled.

With 45 seconds left, Nikiforuk struck his second of the game to give Panthers a 3-2 win.
