Tigers’ suffer ‘freak’ defeat

-

DUNDEE Tigers travelled to Edinburgh on Sunday night where they were defeated 6-3 by the Capitals in one of the strangest games of the season.

Tigers took the lead in the 11th minute through Scott Marr in what turned out to be the only goal of the first period.

Capitals drew level in the 23rd minute before Grant Reekie restored the visitors’ lead with less than 60 more seconds gone.

Scott Beattie levelled things up in the 26th minute as a floated dump on net somehow made it past Mark McGill to nestle in the back of the Tigers net.

The hosts went in front in the 28th minute as an attempted pass by Bruce Tait deflected off a defender’s skate and into the net for what was the final goal of the session.

Tigers came out determined to make up ground in the third period.

However, Ross Hay was attributed with his second goal of the night in the 42nd minute when the puck popped up in front of the net and dropped behind the keeper.

Joel Gautschi extended the Capitals lead with goals in the 49th and 53rd minutes before Paul Guilcher latched on to a stretch pass and picked up his own rebound for Tigers with 30 seconds left to play.

Ian Carstairs, Tigers veteran defender said after the game: “This really did not feel like a 6-3 game.

“The bounces definitely didn’t go our way and it’s hard to take.

“The Capitals scored three freak goals that gave them a bit of momentum.

“At the other end, we failed to put away our numerous chances.

“They had a couple of their Elite players icing for them — but it’s still a game we could have, and should have, been victorious in.

“We now need to regroup and prepare for a huge game against the Dundee Comets this Saturday.”
