Early-hours blaze rips through flat

- BY HANNAH DOLMAN

A HOME has been badly damaged after a fire ripped through the building in the early hours of today.

Firefighters were called to the blaze in Newport shortly after 2am and remained at the scene for several hours.

Crews (pictured right) remained on the scene today at 10am.

The fire began in the bathroom of the top floor flat at 14 Tay Street.

The residents of the property alerted the fire service.

Watch manager Brian Hughes from Tayport Fire Station added: “A call came in at 2.04am to report a fire in the bathroom of the upper dwelling at 14 Tay Street.

“On arrival we discovered the fire had spread to the roof, which was well alight.”

The residents of the flat are understood to have escaped uninjured. The property has been badly damaged with a neighbour describing a “hole” in the roof.

A resident who lives on Tay Street said: “I got up to have a look after being woken by the lights on the fire engines.

I live about two doors down.

“It was then that I realised there was something very serious happening very close by.

“I walked round to the back of the building and I could see the whole roof on fire, with firefighters tackling it.

“Everything must be ruined underneath. There are two flats in the house. I hope no one was hurt.

“I have lived in Newport for about 30 years and this is the first time I can remember something like this happening. “This morning it looks bad. “There’s still a fire engine there, and at least a third of the roof has burned away completely.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Four appliances from Dundee and Tayport attended — three pumps and one height appliance.

“We got the stop call at 4.25am but there is a crew still in attendance at the moment, to make sure there are no hot spots.”

Roads in the area, which were closed during the incident, reopened this morning.
