Man injured as shards of glass strike him on face

A MAN was injured when shards of glass rained down on him following an altercation in a Dundee bar.

Valentin Barberu, 25, threw his glass at the ceiling above Ian Buchan and shards of glass cut his face.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard that Mr Buchan was left bleeding from a one-inch cut above his eye after the incident at Klozet Bar, Seagate.

Barberu’s solicitor has accepted that her client could be facing jail over the incident.

Fiscal depute Vicki Bell told the court that Mr Buchan had gone into t he pub at about 9pm on September 24 with a group of friends, having visited other pubs earlier in the evening.

A group of men, including Barberu, then entered the bar.

Ms Bell said: “Mr Buchan and his friends remained within the locus for the rest of the evening.

“By his own admission he consumed a large amount of alcohol and was drunk by the end of the evening, although fully aware of his surroundings.”

Around 2.20am Barberu passed Mr Buchan and made comments resulting in a verbal exchange between the two men.

The fiscal depute said: “The accused approached Mr Buchan and threw the contents of his glass at Mr Buchan’s face.

“The accused then threw his glass at him, causing the glass to smash on the ceiling in front of Mr Buchan.

“He was hit by shards of glass on his face, one shard leaving a cut above his right eye, which began to bleed.”

There were around 20 people in the pub at the time of the incident.

Door staff restrained Barberu and took him outside before contacting police.

Officers attended and took Barberu to police HQ where he was cautioned and charged, with the help of a Romanian translator.

The cut above Mr Buchan’s eye required a paper stitch.

Barberu, of Dens Road, admitted assaulting Mr Buchan by throwing liquid in his face and striking him on the face with a glass to his injury.

Solicitor Nicola Brown, defending, told the court: “He accepts this matter is serious and that custody could be imposed.”

The court heard Barberu had no previous convictions.

Sentence was deferred until January 9 and bail was continued meantime.
