Dundee duo lose thrilling matches

-

THERE was anguish and despair in two of the three volleyball games at Craigie High School as both Dundee men and women lost in five-set thrillers.

The men were on first against Su Ragazzi ll.

Mike Coward and Louis Groshenry hammered the Ragazzi defence as Dundee took the advantage with set point at 24-23.

However, a service error and a service ace gave Ragazzi set point at 25-24.

Groshenry levelled and a Ragazzi error gave Dundee another set point at 26-25 but sloppy play allowed the visitors to win it 28-26.

In the second set, Ragazzi took a crucial 20-19 lead but Leo Maugeri, Mike Coward and Oz Dowie hauled Dundee back to win the set 25-20.

They then won the third set 25-23 but Ragazzi won the fourth 25-21.

The final set saw Dundee lose it 15-13 and the game 3-2.

Dundee’s ladies team cruised to a 3-0 win against Edinburgh University ll with scores of 25-11, 25-15, 25-9.

Their second game against NUVOC ll proved a stiffer test.

Dundee won the first set 25-22 but NUVOC levelled with a 25-22 second set victory.

A run of points with scores from Lana Edgar, Lucy Wishart and Natahsa Melville kept the third set close. However, a run of seven points in a row from a heavy duty service gave the set to NUVOC 25-20.

A medical time-out for treatment to Hannah Lawrie gave the girls a short rest.

It paid immediate dividends as again Dundee powered their way to a 26-24 win to take the game to a deciding tie-break set.

Hannah gave Dundee a lead at 9-8 but fatigue set in as three tired hits gave the set and game to NUVOIC 15-11.

The girls are back in action tomorrow at 11am at Craigie High School in their Scottish Cup third-round tie against Edinburgh Jets.
