Late strikes leave Bluebells stunned

- BY JUNICUS

IT was a bad day for Tayside clubs in the third round of the Scottish Cup, with only two sides going through to the fourth round.

It was particularly disappointing for Lochee United, who were sent crashing out by Musselburgh after tossing away a two-goal lead against the Lothian club.

The Bluebells broke the deadlock in 17 minutes when a perfectly-flighted Dougie Cameron free-kick was headed home by Aaron Whitehead.

Lochee doubled their advantage a minute into the second half when Connor Birse scored with a close-range shot after a Scott McComiskie header was blocked.

At this stage few would have bet against the Bluebells going on to clinch the tie. However, they dropped out of the game and were punished in 78 minutes when Ewan Ralton pulled one back.

Then, with six minutes to go, the visitors equalised thanks to a low shot from Connor Spowart. Three minutes into time added on, the roof fell in on the home side when ’Burgh grabbed a dramatic winner through a close-range effort from Matty King.

Broughty Athletic came out on top in their local derby with Downfield, although the 5-1 winning margin for the Fed was a bit unkind to Paul Marr’s side.

Broughty took the lead in 27 minutes when Brian Clark raced in on goal and was brought down by home keeper Mark Stewart. Ross McCord slotted in the resultant penalty.

Ryan Suttie knocked in a second from a Paul McLellan free-kick two minutes from the break. Ten minutes after the restart, Downfield were back in the tie when Craig Smith converted a penalty after Ryan Blair fouled Ryan Rigden in the box.

It was to prove a false dawn, however, as the Fed hit back 10 minutes later with Jonathan Smart heading home.

James Collier made it four with 10 minutes to go and Stewart McConnachie headed home a fifth in 85 minutes.

To round off an unhappy afternoon for the Spiders, James Thomson was sent off with a couple of minutes to go.

The reward for Broughty is a home tie against Sauchie in the fourth round.
