City businessman ‘stabbed in house’

- BY JAMES SIMPSON

A MAN is being hunted by police after a Dundee businessman was allegedly stabbed.

Officers were called to Duns Crescent in Whitfield following reports that 26-year-old Umayr Asif had been attacked in a house.

An ambulance was called, but Mr Asif — who ran the now-shut Tasty Bites cafe in the Murraygate — was said to have left the scene by the time paramedics arrived.

Police say a 39-year-old man has been reported over the incident but it’s understood that he has not yet been arrested.

Residents in the street said today that they were “shocked” to hear about the alleged incident, which saw multiple police units descent on the area.

Martin Forrester, 38, who has lived nearby for more than 10 years, said he was leaving the street when officers started arriving.

He said: “There were two vehicles stationary in the street and I saw two officers patrolling the area on foot.

“As we were leaving there were more officers arriving — we were certainly shocked at the volume of officers as it is generally a quiet area.

“We came back to our house around 12.15pm and the last police vehicle was just leaving. They must have been there for at least two hours.” The civil servant added: “An officer came to our door later in the evening to ask us if we had seen anything but we had no idea what had happened.”

Another resident spotted at least 10 police officers scanning the area wearing blue gloves. She added: “I saw at least five police vehicles and an ambulance in the street. You wonder what has been going on but it must have been serious to warrant that volume of officers.

“The police were here for a long time I saw an officer with an evidence bag. CID officers were in the area for days.”

John Mills, 57, a retired offshore worker, said he had noticed a “heavy” police presence.

He said: “There seemed to be police cars continually driving around the block, which is uncommon.”

A spokeswoman for Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed that paramedics had attended along with police, but “the patient couldn’t be found”.

A police spokeswoman said today that a 39-year-old suspect has been reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with the alleged attack, which is said to have happened on November 6.
