Treemendous effort

Bar customers urged to pinch mini Xmas items

- BY SCOTT LORIMER

A DUNDEE bar has come up with a treemendous Christmas initiative — by encouraging people to “steal”.

Bosses at The West House in the city centre are urging folk to try to pinch their mini Christmas trees without staff noticing.

They have then been asked to take a selfie with their phones.

If successful they are encouraging plucky punters to make a donation to charity.

All money raised will go towards the Blake McMillan Trust.

The quirky idea comes after a regular took one of the festive firs from one of the tables on Saturday before going on to a nightclub then taking it home.

Andrew McMahon, owner of the West House, said staff saw the funny side of the incident when the girl posted about the incident online.

The 36-year-old said: “We first noticed one of the trees had gone away at the end of the shift. It wasn’t until the Monday morning that we noticed the post on social media.

“The girl is a good, regular customer and we saw the funny side of it. She left a trail of soil out the door and along the road to Club Tropicana. She must have got attached to the mini tree on the night and taken it with her.”

On Facebook, the West House posted: “Sneak a mini Christmas tree home without one of our staff members catching you, take a selfie with your new friend and check in at The West House.

“In return we will send you a voucher for a free pizza and the Blake McMillan Trust page where we ask you to leave a donation. And for forests’ sake remember this is just a bit of festive fun!”

Andrew continued: “We don’t mind if people take the trees, but it would be in the Christmas spirit if people left a donation.”

Andrew, who is close friends with the McMillan family, said the money would go to a “worthy cause”.

The trust was founded in 2013 to aid young Blake McMillan, of Carnoustie, who has neurological disorder named MECP2 Duplication Syndrome.
