Argyle keep up Scottish Cup defence in Glasgow

- BY GEORGE CRAN

SUNDAY Trophy holders Dundee Argyle continued their dominance of the national trophy as they made their way into the fourth round.

Argyle faced a tough trip to Glasgow to face Castlemilk Dynamo in the third round but a fast start set them up for a fine victory.

The match had been moved on to 3G but the Dundee side didn’t take any time to adjust to the surface.

Argyle took the game to Dynamo and within two minutes had a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Kevin Egan knocked the ball in for Steven Archibald to rise above the defence and head in the opener.

Conceding early spurred on the home side and the match was fiercely-contested with both attacks putting pressure on the defences.

Argyle goalkeeper Lenny Ewing was forced into a tremendous save, keeping the ball out of the top corner as Dynamo searched for an equaliser before the break.

In the second half, it was more of the same with both teams pressing for weaknesses.

The visiting defence held firm, though, and kept Dynamo out.

Argyle finally had a tw0-goal cushion with 20 minutes to go as one Egan found another with Kevin setting up Liam inside the area to pass into the net.

They held on for the win and passage through to the last 32.

The other third-round tie involving a Dundee side, Dundee Social v Charlies Bar, was abandoned after the Ayrshire outfit had trouble finding the park. After kicking off 45 minutes late, the referee called a halt when darkness descended.

In the league, there were wins for Osnaburg, 8-2 over Charlie Accies, while Tayport edged Polonia 3-2.

This weekend is the last of the calendar year with the winter break coming up on the back of them.

There are only two games scheduled with Charlie Accies hosting Dundee Social at Lochee and Annfield playing Osnaburg at Ardler.

In the U/16s, East Craigie Swifts had to wait until extra-time to see off East Kilbride in the fifth round while Dryburgh U/15s were beaten by Tynecastle 4-0.

Arbroath U/14s had a fine result on t he road, beating Irvine Meadows 6-3 to book their place in the fifth round.
