Restaurants doing finger licking good at foodbank

- BY HANNAH DOLMAN

KFC and Nando’s are offering to spice up the Dundee Foodbank for the festive season.

The restaurants — which sell mostly chicken products — have agreed to provide the foodbank with their unsold cooked and frozen chickens, with this year’s Christmas food parcels benefitting.

Manager Ken Linton said he was delighted to announce the “kind” gesture by the fast food chains.

Nando’s, based on the Nethergate, was the first to come forward with an offer to donate chicken which would otherwise go to waste.

KFC’s High Street branch has now also j oined forces with the foodbank as part of its food donation scheme.

A KFC spokeswoman said: “We hate food waste and do everything we can to minimize it through initiatives such as our food donation scheme where we donate unsold chicken to l ocal charities.

“The scheme is continuing to expand in our restaurants across the UK and we are proud of the latest partnership with Dundee Foodbank.”

Ken said the foodbank was pleased to have linked up with the two fast food companies.

He said: “It’s fantastic to be able to give people something like this — chicken from somewhere they can’t afford to go.

“It’s more than just chicken — it’s a bit of l uxury f or them which couldn’t be more welcome at this time of year.

“Christmas can be so hard on families in particular, with children missing out on treats or parents having to go hungry so they can offer something like a meal at Nando’s or KFC.

“But this provides a nice additional bonus to individuals and families who receive a food parcel. Thank you Nando’s and KFC.”

KFC’s food donation scheme has seen more than 25 tonnes of chicken donated to local charities — the equivalent of 65,000 meals.

Ken said it was fantastic that Dundee will also now benefit from the scheme.

If it is successful, it could continue indefinitely.

KFC’s High Street branch will make its first donation of chicken next week.

Other KFC branches in the city could sign up for the scheme as time goes on.

Nando’s has been asked to comment but had not responded at the time of going to press.
