Community hub bid

Club’s fundraising to build multi sports games arena

- BY LINDSEY HAMILTON

Monifieth Athletic Football Club hopes to provide an astro turf and all weather pitch.

The cost of a seven-a-side pitch would be £300,000 while a full size pitch would set the club back £600,000.

The club has launched a campaign to try to raise the first £20,000 of the cost.

A spokesman for the club said: “As a club we want to provide an astro turf all weather pitch which will be used as a multi sport games arena.

“This will assist in all-year training for our teams and soccer school as we presently have no training facilities or go elsewhere for winter training due to no local facility.

“This facility would be available for use by the local community as a valuable resource. As a club we are already looking at, once complete, it being used for walking football and by children with additional support needs.

“It could also be used for a number of other opportunities.

“We will be looking at various avenues of funding, including applying for grants and speaking with the local authority.

“While it is early in the process of getting this facility, as a club we want to show a commitment to getting this moving.

“Initial estimates show it will cost approximately £300,000 for a 7-aside pitch and £600,000 for a full size pitch. Or in simple terms £100 per square metre.

“Let’s see if we can bring this facility to Monifieth.”

The club currently leases grass football pitches at Riverview Monifieth for their 10 youth football teams.

It has recently been awarded the SFA Quality Mark for Development award.

A LOCAL youth football team is aiming to raise thousands of pounds towards a multi sports games arena.
