Man, 32, appears in court over ‘stand-off’ with cops

A MAN has appeared in court facing charges including assault and brandishin­g a hammer after multiple police units descended on a Dundee street.

Mark Cosgrove, 32, of Lilybank Terrace, was arrested on Friday night.

The street was said to be in “lockdown” with more than a dozen police vehicles in attendance.

Police officers with riot shields and dogs were allegedly involved in a three-hour siege at a property.

Following his arrest, Cosgrove appeared in private at Dundee Sheriff Court.

He made no plea or declaratio­n in relation to three charges on petition.

Cosgrove is charged with assaulting Allan McFie by punching him on the head to his injury at a property on Lilybank Terrace.

He is also charged with behaving in a threatenin­g or abusive manner at the same location on the same date.

He allegedly committed this offence by brandishin­g a hammer, shouting, swearing, making threats of violence and spitting at police.

Cosgrove is also charged with destroying or damaging the property of another by smashing a glass panel within a door, again at the same location and on the same date.

The case was continued for further inquiries.

Gavin Elliot, 18, who lives nearby, previously told the Tele: “There were police dogs and a riot van there.

“The police officers in the van had big riot shields and they were standing at the house for hours.”

Another resident added: “I looked out through the blinds and saw a load of people standing outside a neighbour’s house.

“I didn’t want to be seen looking but I heard them there for hours.”

The i ncident started at about 6.30pm on Friday.
