Man, 32, appears in court over ‘stand-off’ with cops

A MAN has appeared in court facing charges including assault and brandishing a hammer after multiple police units descended on a Dundee street.

Mark Cosgrove, 32, of Lilybank Terrace, was arrested on Friday night.

The street was said to be in “lockdown” with more than a dozen police vehicles in attendance.

Police officers with riot shields and dogs were allegedly involved in a three-hour siege at a property.

Following his arrest, Cosgrove appeared in private at Dundee Sheriff Court.

He made no plea or declaration in relation to three charges on petition.

Cosgrove is charged with assaulting Allan McFie by punching him on the head to his injury at a property on Lilybank Terrace.

He is also charged with behaving in a threatening or abusive manner at the same location on the same date.

He allegedly committed this offence by brandishing a hammer, shouting, swearing, making threats of violence and spitting at police.

Cosgrove is also charged with destroying or damaging the property of another by smashing a glass panel within a door, again at the same location and on the same date.

The case was continued for further inquiries.

Gavin Elliot, 18, who lives nearby, previously told the Tele: “There were police dogs and a riot van there.

“The police officers in the van had big riot shields and they were standing at the house for hours.”

Another resident added: “I looked out through the blinds and saw a load of people standing outside a neighbour’s house.

“I didn’t want to be seen looking but I heard them there for hours.”

The i ncident started at about 6.30pm on Friday.
