Affordable homes bid

Plans for site of former neighbourhood centre

PROPOSALS for 32 new affordable homes have been submitted to Dundee City Council.

Developer Cruden Homes hopes to build the properties on the site of the former Longhaugh Neighbourhood Centre at Pitkerro Road.

The 1.2 hectare site is at the north end of Pitkerro Road, behind the recently re-erected Iceland store, and is currently empty.

The community centre was demolished on the site in 2011.

Architect for the developers, Hackland and Dore, said an opportunity exists to “revitalise and enhance” the site by providing social housing for the Home Group Housing Association.

The architects’ design brief states: “The principle is to redevelop this suburban, brownfield site and realise its potential by accommodating 32, twostorey residential plots with associated car parking and landscaping to provide quality, affordable housing to the Pitkerro area.”

The site is laid out to maximise surveillance and provide a safe and vibrant community for residents.

The report added: “The housing mix has been determined by Home Group to satisfy housing needs in the area and includes a mix of larger family semi-detached housing with smaller terraced accommodation and twostorey cottage flats, including three wheelchair units.

“The site is on a prominent route into the city and close to public transport.

“It benefits from excellent local amenities including shopping, which will reduce the reliance of residents on private cars.”

Stuart Dixon, Home Scotland’s head of development, said it was hoped planning permission would be approved to build 32 homes for local people in need of social rent.

He added: “The site has previously been granted residential planning permission and as a brownfield site we feel we can bring it back into productive use.

“We’re hoping to build a mixture of houses and flats with a minimum of two bedrooms. Flats will be designed to appear like large semi-detached homes to fit in with the surrounding housing.”
