Original John Menzies store was favourite

-

THE picture in Saturday’s Back in the Day feature of John Menzies brought back memories.

The shop was located on the corner of Commercial Street and Murraygate and stretched over several floors.

I remember there were loads of nooks and crannies of display areas.

In the mid to late 70s when my friend and I started venturing into town no visit would be complete without popping in there.

Or, of course, the much magnificent and newly opened Wellgate.

John Menzies was where we bought our first 7-inch single records.

Mine was “A Little Bit More” by Doctor Hook, while she went for the much more classic “Sailing” by Rod Stewart.

I remember us deliberating for ages over what songs we’d buy.

In these days of instant downloads, my kids will never know that pleasure.

Happy days.

REGARDING the Back in the Day section last Saturday the location you stated for John Menzies was wrong.

The picture shows the original site on the corner of Commercial Street and Murraygate which is now occupied by Costa and The Body Shop.

The location you gave was the old Woolworths store which moved many years ago from Murraygate into the once Tesco store in the Wellgate. John Menzies then followed Woolies and the Murraygate store is now Tesco Metro.

As for your question about the picture of the perfume section (above), I think that could be the old Arnott’s store rather than the Wellgate as you suggested.

It looks like the stairs in background that were at the back of store. Perfumes were sold on the ground level.
