Car in ‘high-speed’ chase through city

- BY BRYAN COPLAND

POLICE are hunting the driver of a car that led officers on a “high-speed” chase through streets in Dundee.

Traffic officers attempted to stop the car close to the city centre on Christmas Eve but the driver made off.

Police gave chase but soon after gave up on the pursuit and later found the car abandoned.

One eyewitness described seeing a number of police cars chasing after the silver Volkswagen Bora on Dens Road, travelling from the direction of the city centre.

He told the Tele: “They came from the Victoria Road end and went through the traffic lights at the junction of Dens Road and Alexander Street.

“When I saw them I was at traffic lights in Dura Street.

“They came at speed to the roundabout with Dura Street, slowed down a bit and sped off towards Strathmore Avenue roundabout.

“There was a marked BMW police car with flashing lights and siren right behind the speeding car, and another unmarked silver Audi was also behind but it looked like the Audi was trying to catch up with the chase as it was some distance away.

“You could easily say that they were travelling at speed, as they all vanished within seconds.”

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “About 9.40pm on Saturday December 24, road policing officers attempted to stop a silver Volkswagen Bora in connection with suspected road traffic offences, including tax, MOT and insurance offences.

“The vehicle failed to stop and was pursued for a short time before the officers made the decision to terminate the pursuit in the interests of safety.

“The vehicle was subsequently traced and seized by police.

“Inquiries are ongoing to trace the driver and anyone with information is asked to contact Tayside Division on 101.”

Police have to carry out an assessment of risk when taking part in the pursuit of a vehicle — with consideration taken of any threat to people’s safety.

Each pursuit is also subject to a review to ensure officers complied with procedure and improve policies or training.
