Police hunt driver after chase crash

- BY JON BRADY

POLICE are hunting two people who fled a car crash following a “70mph” pursuit by officers through the streets of Dundee.

A black Audi was found abandoned on Pitkerro Drive after it was seen being driven “at some speed” and crashing into a bollard and a dog waste bin.

Officers with dogs were seen searching nearby streets and gardens but the culprits have yet to be found.

A picture from the scene (inset) showed the car parked in the middle of a grassy area halfway down Pitkerro Drive, having smashed through a bollard, with officers standing next to it.

Local resident Nicola Rennie said she saw three police cars at the scene, with a police dog searching for the driver and passenger, after hearing a “big screech” shortly before 8pm.

She said: “The car was going really fast — I would easily say about 70mph. I thought he was going to come through my wall. I really got a fright.

“The driver just bolted. The police ran after him but they came back without him. They were here for about 20 minutes to half an hour.”

Another resident said: “I just heard a big huge bang, like an explosion. I saw the police were looking for him. They were all over the place. I’m just glad my car wasn’t on the road.”

She added: “That’s the third time one of those bollards has been taken out in about 10 years. If there had been kids here playing they could’ve been hit by the car.”

On social media, Wendy McLean said it was “worrying” to hear about an “active pursuit” on her street — describing seeing 13 police cars, with police dogs scouring back gardens.

Another local added: “The drama I’ve just witnessed with police chasing some guy or guys. Many cars and unmarked cars. Got to love some drama.”

A police spokesman confirmed the car had been involved in a pursuit.

A spokeswoman added officers had been called to the Kingsway area to deal with a crash on Friday. She added: “The driver and passenger of the vehicle were seen to run off in the direction of Alloway Terrace and Pitkerro Drive. Officers were in the area seeking to trace them in connection with the collision. The black Audi A3 was recovered and inquiries into the incident are continuing.”
