Let’s fight back over rates hike

-

THERE is something that every pub and hotel owner in Dundee affected by outrageous hikes in business rates must do.

They must protest as if their lives (or livelihoods) depend on it — and as soon as possible.

The Scottish Assessors Association has revalued business rates payable from next April, with some of our hospitality providers set to see their bills double.

Duke’s Corner in the city centre faces a 240 per cent increase of around £24,000 a year, while the Old Bank Bar on Reform Street will see a 183 per cent increase, or an estimated £26,000.

There are many more — though for how much longer they will be able to thrive with such astronomic bills is anyone’s guess.

Some businesses are set for a decrease in rates — but it shouldn’t stop them showing solidarity with their fellow traders and making a fuss.

I don’t pretend to know how much money a pub makes annually but unless it’s millions in profit, the above figures would hurt any pocket.

Ratings expert Andy Boal from Ryden’s commercial property services in Dundee says the rates are “all over the place” and urged businesses to appeal within six months if they disagree with the new figures.

So come on — let’s not take this lying down.

Dundee is buzzing with trendy bars, old fashioned boozers, wine bars, new hotels and the promise of more to come.

Are we to let some faceless agency destroy the hard work that has gone in to making us great?

Are we to let businesses be destroyed, costing jobs and diminishing our economy?

Of course not. Whether a landlord, staff member or passionate Dundonian, let’s make ourselves heard.
