ROUND-UP Superb Stars get full points from weekend

-

DUNDEE CCS Stars recaptured their earlyseason form when they took full points from their weekend games.

After beating Fife Flyers 4-3 after extra time in Kirkcaldy on Saturday, Dundee recorded a 5-4 win over title challengers, Belfast Giants in a penalty shoot-out win in Dundee last night.

They did it the hard way after Giants came back from a 4-1 deficit to tie the game at 4-4 before the home side went on to win on penalties.

In Kirkcaldy on Saturday, Flyers started without top goal-scorer Ryan Dingle and Riki Jackman. Ben Edmonds and Kris Inglis sat it out for Stars.

Flyers opened the scoring after 14 seconds. Sebastien Thinel found Justin Fox clear in front of the net and he had a simple tap-in to make it 1-0.

Stars’ Cale Tanaka was awarded two minutes f or hooking but the home side gave up possession with a defensive error and a shot from Felix Poulin found the net to level the game at 1-1.

Tanaka was back in the box on 17 minutes and this time Flyers did take advantage of the extra man when Chase Schaber found Fox who scored.

Dundee levelled through Vinny Scarsella.

In 34 minutes, Joey Sides fired in a low shot that beat Shane Owen to give Dundee the lead.

Just three minutes later, though, the Fifers levelled the score when a pass from Matt Sisca found Brendan Brooks, who found the net for 3-3.

Two minutes into the final period and Stars’ fans thought their team had taken the lead when a shot from Mikael Lidhammar looked netbound only for it to hit the underside of the bar and come out.

Both teams created chances in the final session but neither was able to find the net as the game entered sudden death overtime.

With two minutes gone in the extra session, Stars tied up the points when Poulin scored to give the Taysiders a 4-3 win.

Last night for the game against Belfast Giants in DIA, Justin Faryna didn’t ice for the home side after picking up an injury against Fife.

Stars took the lead after three minutes when Lidhammar netted and, four minutes later, they doubled their advantage with a goal from the in-form Bruijsten.

Giants pulled a goal back with just under two minutes left in the stanza when Jim Vandermeer netted.

Stars hit back 50 seconds later when Bruijsten added his second and Dundee’s third goal of the game to go into the period break ahead by 3-1.

Thirteen minutes into the middle session, Scarsella was through on Giants keeper, Stephen Murphy when he was brought down by the netminder and Stars were awarded a penalty shot. Scarsella placed the puck behind the hapless Murphy to give the home side a 4-1 lead.

With just over two minutes remaining i n t he second period, Stars were on the powerplay after Matt Nickerson was given two minutes for slashing but it was Giants who found the net with a shorthanded goal from Derrick Walser to bring the score back to 4-2.

In almost a carbon copy of Giants’ second goal, the visitors pulled it back to 4-3 just over one minute into the final session. Matt Nickerson was again given two minutes, this time for hooking, and once again Belfast scored a shorthanded counter through Blair Riley.

With t wo minutes left, Belfast snatched the equaliser when Riley added his second of the evening to take the game into sudden-death overtime.

With no scoring in the extra period, the game went to a penalty shootout and Stars collected both points in a 5-4 win after Lidhammar netted the winning penalty.
