Pointless weekend for Flyers

-

FIFE Flyers failed to win either of their two games when they lost out to Braehead Clan on Saturday by 5-2 and followed that with a 2-1 defeat in Kirkcaldy last night to Cardiff Devils.

In Braehead on Saturday, Flyers lost the opening goal after three minutes through Lee Baldwin.

Alex Leavitt doubled Clan’s advantage four minutes later and the home side took their 2-0 lead into the second period.

Midway through the second session, Braehead made it 3-0 with a counter from Cody Carlson but Fife retaliated with goals from Sebastien Thinel just seconds later and Carlo Finucci, who made it 3-2 with three minutes left in the period.

Clan sealed the points in the final session with two goals from Mike Hammond. His first came just two minutes after the restart and then, in 59 minutes, he confirmed the victory with his second and Clan’s fifth goal, this time into the empty net after Flyers had pulled goalie Shane Owen in favour of the extra skater.

League leaders Cardiff Devils came to Fife Ice Arena last night looking to maintain their push for the title and they opened the scoring after eight minutes when Sean Bentivoglio netted on the powerplay, with Fife’s Bryan Cameron sitting out a two-minute penalty for high sticks.

Just 60 seconds into the second stanza and, with Flyers on the powerplay, the home goalie was caught in possession of the puck and Joey Martin scored into the empty net for a 2-0 lead.

In 48 minutes, Flyers found themselves back in the game when Chris Wands unleashed a slapshot that flew past Ben Bowns into the net for 2-1.

The home side pressed for the equaliser but the Cardiff defence held firm to pick up both points in a 2-1 win, leaving Flyers pointless from their two games this weekend.
