Teen Bailey adds steel to Gowfers

- BY JUNICUS

CARNOUSTIE were Tayside’s only winners in the Super League at the weekend, beating visiting Hill of Beath thanks to two first-half goals.

Once again, the Gowfers were forced into changes due to injuries but produced a highly-impressive performance at Laing Park.

The Angus side gave a full debut to 17-year-old Bailey Steel in the middle of the park and the youngster was highly impressive on his first start.

Carnoustie took the game by the scruff of the neck and took a deserved lead on 11 minutes when a slick passing move was completed by Jamie McCabe, who slipped the ball past Stuart Hall.

Ten minutes later, it was 2-0 when Gordon Macdonald let fly from 25 yards, giving Hall no chance as the ball found the top corner.

Alan McSkimming’s men dominated the rest of the first half but couldn’t add to their lead.

The second half was much the same. Macdonald had a chance to score a third from the spot but his penalty was well saved by Hall.

Broughty Athletic made it eight starts without a win when a poor second-half defensive performance saw them slump to a 5-2 defeat at Camelon.

The Fed handed a debut to their latest signing, former Trinidad and Tobago international Richard “Shaka” Roy. However, the new man couldn’t inspire the Whitton Park side to their first league victory since the start of October.

It was 1-1 at the interval, a Grant Lawson header cancelling out the hosts’ opener.

But it all went pear shaped for Keith Gibson’s side in the first 10 minutes of the second half when Camelon scored three goals, helped in the main by individual errors from the Broughty defence.

Paul McLellan pulled one back from a penalty but the Mariners added a fifth with 10 minutes to go. Lochee United lost 4-1 at Kelty Hearts. Bryan Deasley grabbed the Bluebells goal from the spot.

Lochee have transferred Charlie Cargill and Ross Gallagher to Downfield.
